A lot of changes have taken place in and around Nashville Tennessee since the start of the pandemic. The influx of transplants, or carpet baggers, as they’ve been called, means yet another transition for the south. Old South vs. New South. Deep reflection always precedes a paradigm shift. I wonder if the south will attempt to secede from the rest of the states. Passport requirements and immigration paperwork required for relocation, along with only allowing southern chartered corporations to operate with its borders, would ensure we wouldn’t suffer the same fate as other “it” cities and states. Rising crime rates, tent cities, diminishing housing affordability and stagnant wages created the crises other states are currently experiencing. Whether due to greed or ignorance, actions or lack thereof, the mess is spreading like wildfire. The residents of these states are fleeing the dire conditions of their own making, bringing the death of affordability and the destruction of green pastures, fresh air and clear skies with them. After the last few years, it absolutely wouldn’t surprise me if a civil war broke out. Rental and real estate prices, worsening traffic and the copious amounts of litter and trash being strewn all over our highways and side streets are becoming unbearable. The contemptuous boorishness of those proclaiming “everything here is so cheap” and “ the people here are so friendly!” are pushing the culture of civility and Southern gentility to its brink. When followed by actions that disenfranchise the native population through the pillaging and plundering of land and profits, quiet discontent grows into a choir, this flowerbed needs a good weeding. What was once only a whisper, is now aired on bumper stickers, stating ‘Don’t California My Tennessee!” something in the South is a’brewing and honey, it ain’t sweet tea.

Subject Matter - Scarlett’s likeness sits in front of an ornate antique gold framed mirror, gazing at her distorted reflection and wearing her curtain dress. Her face is a bouquet of native and non-native flowers in bloom.
